South Dakota became the 40th state of the union on November 2, 1889. The state has two unique physical features: it contains the geographic centre of the United States, which is located just north of Belle Fourche, and it has its own continental divide, as a result of which Lake Traverse, in the southeastern corner of the state, flows northward to Hudson Bay, and Big Stone Lake, on the Minnesota border, flows southward to the Gulf of Mexico.
South Dakota is bordered by the states of North Dakota (to the north), Minnesota (to the east), Iowa (to the southeast), Nebraska (to the south), Wyoming (to the west), and Montana (to the northwest). The state is bisected by the Missouri River, dividing South Dakota into two geographically and socially distinct halves, known to residents as “East River” and “West River”.

South Dakota Flag
The flag of South Dakota represents the U.S. state of South Dakota. It consists of a field of sky blue charged with a version (in navy blue on white) of the state seal in the center, surrounded by gold triangles representing the sun’s rays, surrounded in turn by inscriptions in gold sans-serif capitals of “South Dakota” on top and “the mount Rushmore state” (the state nickname) on the bottom. The sun represents the common weather in South Dakota. The inscription on the bottom was “the sunshine state” before it was changed in 1992.
The official pledge of the South Dakota flag is “I pledge loyalty and support to the flag and state of South Dakota, land of sunshine, land of infinite variety.” The only protocol to the state flag pledge is that it does not either replace or pre-empt the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States.
